Keighley SCC Appeal For Volunteers

Keighley Sea Cadets Corps (SCC) and The Royal Marine Cadets are appealing for volunteers. Both are local non-profit youth organisations that work with children aged between 10-18 years. Unlike other service cadets, Keighley SCC are not funded by the Ministry of Defence. They are an independent non-profit charity and their unit is run by a small team of volunteers which includes staff and committee members. They work hard to allow cadets the opportunity to go to sea, learn to sail and do adventure training, helping them to develop extra skills to give them a head start in life.
They also have a Royal Marine Detachment and the cadets partake in many field activities such as camping, navigation and team building activities, all of which help them develop transferable skills which they can carry through into adult life.

One of the Keighley Sea Cadets’ main fundraising events is the annual duck race which is held at Bolton Abbey as its President is the Duke of Devonshire. The day features stalls, a tombola, lucky dips and raffle ticket selling. At 3pm the race begins and 2,000 yellow ducks are launched from the Cavendish Pavilion Bridge. The ducks race for approximately 300 metres down the river and the leading duck, retrieved by a Cadet, is announced as the winner and is followed by the 2nd and 3rd placed runners up. All of the cadets are then tasked with retrieving the remaining ducks from the water. Winners will be contacted via telephone and a cheque for the winning amount will be forwarded to them.

Keighley SCC are appealing for volunteers to help make a difference to Keighley’s next generation.  Whether you are ex-forces and want to pass on your skills and inspire the cadets, or if you are interested in water sports or adventure activities or would like to make new friends and develop your own personal skills then they’re keen to hear from you.  Alternatively, you may want to help them redecorate and maintain the unit, or have business skills and fundraising skills that could help their management team.

Gwen Morris has been with Wyedean for 21 years and she is also a volunteer at Keighley SCC. Corrine Metcalf is Chairperson of Keighley SCC, and she is a former employee of Wyedean and left back in 2011 after being with us for 22 years.
